Nato has not changed its position on the deployment of the U.S. missile shield in Europe, Nato Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said at a meeting with journalists in Brussels on Jan. 19.

Nato is working to deploy the U.S. missile shield in Europe irrespective of U.S. President-elect Barrack Obama's position on the issue, he said.

"Nato is working on the fundamentals of the issue independently of the U.S.," Scheffer said.

The U.S. missile shield will be deployed in Poland and the Czech Republic to protect against potential rocket attacks from Iran and North Korea. Along with 10 rockets in Poland, a radar will be set up in the Czech Republic.
