Azerbaijan, Baku, April 9 / Trend , K. Zarbaliyeva/

An appeal of the local newspaper chief editor, who was sentenced on April 7, will be examined in Azerbaijan on April 9.

Judge Gayil Mammadov will examine the appeal against the Yasamal District Court's resolution at the Baku Appeals Court, "Tazadlar" (Contradictions) newspaper Chief Editor Asif Marzili's Lawyer Elchin Sadigli told Trend on April 9.

The Azerbaijan International University (AIU) Rector Elshad Abdullayev, AIU First Pro-rector Huseyn Ahmadov, ABU Teacher Eldaniz Abdullayev and Baku City Taxes Department Inspector Islam Abdullayev filed a lawsuit on Chief Editor Asif Marzili and newspaper employee Zumrud Mammadova to protect their honor and dignity.

The court sentenced Marzili to one-year imprisonment and involved Mammadova to community work for 6 months.

Plaintiffs demanded from the court to arrest the responsible persons due to articles about false facts about the AIU rector and his university, as well as about AIU Chair Head Mahir Abdullayev who was missing in 2003 under unknown conditions.

Sadigli said the court will examine the appeal at 16:00 on April 9.

Azerbaijani Press Council has appealed President Ilham Aliyev to assist in examining the suit by the court.

The Press Council asks the court to change the sentence given journalist's family conditions.

The president regrets the chief editor's being arrested, Presidential Administration Pubic-Political Department Ali Hasanov told journalists in his interview.
