ASTANA, Kazakhstan, February 4. In January of this year, the Shardara Reservoir received 2.6 billion cubic meters of water from the Syr Darya River, which is 100 million cubic meters more than the projected amount, Trend reports.
Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Nurzhan Nurzhigitov met with residents of the Turkistan region of Kazakhstan and inspected the operation of large water management facilities in the region.
In the village of Myrzakent in the Maktaaral district, Nurzhan Nurzhigitov also met with the residents of the Turkistan region. The minister delivered a report in which he outlined the efforts made to ensure the region had the required water volumes.
"Last year, we actively negotiated with neighboring countries, which allowed us to fully supply farmers in southern Kazakhstan with irrigation water. Now, we are carefully checking whether the agreements signed by Kazvodkhoz with regional farmers were adhered to. We are investigating any violations and instances of water supply without contracts. Representatives from the ministry’s Internal Audit Department previously visited the region," noted Minister Nurzhan Nurzhigitov.
Residents of the Turkistan region asked the minister questions regarding the reconstruction of irrigation and drainage systems, the condition of certain hydraulic structures, the distribution of irrigation water, water supply contracts, the construction of new reservoirs, the preparation of new specialists, and subsidies for farmers.
Additionally, after meeting with citizens, Nurzhan Nurzhigitov inspected the condition of the Shardara Reservoir and the operation of its dam, the reconstruction of which was completed at the end of 2023.
