New Zealand unemployment rate drops to 3.4 per cent

( dpa )- New Zealand's unemployment rate in the quarter ending in December fell to 3.4 per cent, the lowest since a household labour force survey was introduced to measure the jobless rate 20 years ago, it was announced Thursday.

Unemployment was down 0.1 per cent on the previous low in the September quarter last year, Statistics New Zealand said.

A total of 23,000 people found jobs in the December quarter, building the workforce to a record 2,173,000.

Indigenous workers remained more likely to be out of work than whites whose jobless rate was 2.3 per cent. The rate for Maoris was 7.3 per cent and for Pacific Island immigrants 4.7 per cent.
