Georgia will host the first International Olive Assembly in 2021, said the president of the International Olives Council and the founder of the Georgian Olive company Georgi Svanidze, Trend reports via Georgian media.
Within the framework of the international forum, the ministers of agriculture of 17 countries and leading world olive producers will arrive in Georgia.
The Assembly in Georgia was planned in 2020, but due to COVID-19 it is being held remotely in Madrid, in which the Minister of Environment and Agriculture of Georgia Levan Davitashvili is taking part.
As Svanidze stated, this confirms that Georgia is one of the strategic countries for the development of olive production. According to him, since Georgia became an official member of the International Olive Council in 2019, the organization considers it as the third hub in Europe, after Italy and Spain.
"To a certain extent, this will attract investments, new olive processing facilities will be created, and the products will be delivered to Kazakhstan, Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, Uzbekistan and China through Georgia," Svanidze said.
According to him, the president of the Council is constantly elected for a period of one year, but for the first time in its history, Georgia was elected twice.
The International Olive Council was established in 1959 in Madrid, the capital of Spain. The Council includes 48 countries of the world.
