Furniture sales were down by 60-70 percent in 2020 in Georgia, said Zuka Badridze, head of Georgian furniture manufacturing company 'Home Made', Trend reports via Georgian media.
The company says that the administration faces reducing employees' salaries because sales of "HomeMade" furniture have halved at least in the last two months.
"It is very difficult to make a preliminary forecast. In this industry, it has become impossible to predict a customer's decision in advance. We sent the employees on unpaid leave, and the loss of the pandemic naturally affected the salary fund as well," Badridze said.
According to HomeMade, like other industries, it is unknown when the sector will be able to return to the COVID-19 pre-pandemic level.
Turkey is the main exporter of furniture to Georgia. Export of wood and furniture from Turkey to Georgia decreased by 18.6 percent in the past nine months of 2020 compared to the same period of 2019, having made up over $88.2 million.
In September 2020, Turkey exported wood and furniture worth over $11.5 million to Georgia, which is 11.81 percent compared to the same month of 2019.
