Turkey has potential to become a transit country for Israel's gas export to Europe, Salihe Kaya, research assistant at Turkish Foundation for Political, Economic and Social Research (SETA), told Trend Apr.8.
She noted that the gas reserve, estimated at 6.7 trillion cubic meters, can enable Israel to become a fuel exporting country, but the transport infrastructure issue remains unresolved.
"The export of Israel's liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Europe is not beneficial from the economic point of view," said Kaya.
The expert believes that the territories of Turkey and Northern Cyprus are a perfect route for the transit of Israeli gas to European markets, since Turkey has already started to create infrastructure to transport gas to Europe - The Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP).
TANAP project envisages transportation of gas of Azerbaijan's Shah Deniz field from Georgian-Turkish border to the western borders of Turkey.
Turkey will get gas in 2018 and after completing the construction of Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), it will be delivered to Europe in early 2020.
Currently, the shareholders of TANAP are: the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) - 58 percent, Botas - 30 percent and BP - 12 percent.
