Azerbaijani IT and Communications Minister Ali Abbasov invited Estonian companies to participate in the regional innovation zones (RIZ) project in Azerbaijan. The government is currently considering RIZ, and the project may be implemented as soon as 2009. "This is an extensive project and investors will have favorable working conditions," Abbasov said at a meeting with Estonian Economic Affairs and Communications Minister Juhan Parts. RIZ aims to develop technology parks for small- and medium-sized innovative entrepreneurs, create a regional base for producing and exporting electronic hardware and software products, turn the nation into a lucrative transit information center, provide human resources training and introduce IT technology to various industries. According to Abbasov, tax and customs privileges will be introduced under RIZ. This will make the project interesting for all foreign companies, including Estonia, he said. The minister expressed his interest in joint IT projects between Azerbaijani and Estonian companies. "In the EU, Estonia has the most advanced IT sector, and we have already received several concrete proposals from Tallinn," Abbasov said. The Estonian proposals being considered by the ministry deal with e-governance. "We are also interested in Estonia because the country is able to develop projects in line with European standards," Abbasov said.
