The Russian TransTeleCom's (TTC) EurasiaHighway could serve as the foundation for the East-West information superhighway, which was initiated by Azerbaijan at a recent U.N. meeting. The statement was made at a Regional Commonwealth of Communications (RCC) conference in Dushanbe last week.
Azerbaijan was represented at the event by the Communications and IT Ministry.
TTC Vice President and International Sales Department head Alexander Stolyarov said that the demand among CIS countries for international telecommunications capacity will increase by four times over the next five years. Russia will remain the main hub of Internet traffic.
"We see good prospects for business development in the CIS. Our task is to offer the best way to transit traffic and become a leading provider of RCC Internet backbone operators," Stolyarov said.
The EurasiaHighway was designed for foreign operator traffic transmission. The highway was constructed six years ago and has a capacity of 110 Gbps.
Azerbaijan made the proposal to create the super East-West informational highway at the sixty-sixth plenary meeting of the U.N. The organization expressed support for the project, which aims to eliminate the "informational gap" between the East and the West.
