ASTANA, Kazakhstan, May 28. Kazakhstan intends to modernize the system to increase gas transit from Russia to Uzbekistan, said Energy Minister Almassadam Satkaliev after the government meeting, Trend reports.

"There are plans to increase the transit of Russian gas to Uzbekistan. Currently, 3.8 billion cubic meters of Russian gas are already planned for transit to Uzbekistan. To increase supplies to 11 billion cubic meters, modernization of the gas transportation system will be required. The QazaqGas company is ready to make appropriate investments," he said.

According to the minister, the project will benefit Kazakhstan by receiving money from transit and through parity.

"We always agree that Kazakh consumers have the opportunity to receive the appropriate volume of gas," Satkaliyev said.

Meanwhile, the volume of Russian gas transported through the territory of Kazakhstan amounted to 1.114 billion cubic meters from January through February 2024. This volume almost reached the transited Russian gas for the entire 2023 - 1.28 billion cubic meters.

Furthermore, Russia's gas supplies to Uzbekistan are planned to quadruple in 2026—up to 11 billion cubic meters per year.

"Last year, with the participation of the president of the state, the transit of Russian gas in the amount of up to 3 billion cubic meters per year was initiated through our country's territory to Uzbekistan," Kazakh Energy Minister Almassadam Satkaliyev said at a board meeting of the Energy Ministry.

On October 7, 2023, President of Russia Vladimir Putin, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev, and President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev gave a start to the transit of Russian natural gas through the territory of Kazakhstan to Uzbekistan. Gas transit is carried out through the Central Asia-Center gas trunkline.
