Kazakhstan plans to splash out on plethora of locomotives

ASTANA, Kazakhstan, July 11. Kazakhstan plans to buy 559 locomotives by 2028, including 193 electric locomotives and 366 diesel locomotives, Trend reports.

As of December 31, 2023, the locomotive fleet in Kazakhstan amounted to 1,778 units, including 1,151 diesel locomotives and 527 electric locomotives. The main share of locomotives in the amount of 96 percent belongs to the group of companies Kazakhstan Railways (KTZ, national company), and 4 percent to private owners.

KTZ purchased 267 locomotives, of which 113 locomotives in 2023. Due to the acquisition of new locomotives by NC KTZ JSC, the level of wear and tear decreased from 68 percent at the end of 2020 to 52 percent at the end of 2023.

Meanwhile, Kazakhstan produced 29 diesel locomotives from January through May 2024, which is 7 locomotives, or 32 percent more year-on-year.

In addition, during the above period, 442 freight cars were produced in the country. During the same period last year, the production of freight cars amounted to 22, which means a 20-fold increase in production.

In May 2024, 42 freight cars were produced, which is 323 percent more than in the same period in 2023 (13 freight cars).
