The prices on domestically-produced and imported rice have risen by 8 percent and 6 percent in Iran in the beginning of the last month of the current calendar year, February 20, compared to the same date of last year.
The head of the union of Iranian rice producers, Jamil Alizadeh Shayeq, told Mehr news agency that the country imported 500,000-600,000 tons of rice. He put the volume of domestically-produced rice at around 2.25 million tons.
India accounts for some 70 percent of Iran's rice imports. Reuters quoted a number of Indian rice exporters as saying that Iran has imported some 200,000 tons of rice, valued at $144 million, during October-November 2011 from India, but they face problems with paying the money.
