The Iranian parliament (Majlis) plans to discuss a bill aimed to stop paying foreign currency at the official rate (1,226 rials) to travelers.
MP Arsalan Fathipour told the Mehr News Agency that paying foreign currency to travellers is not economically justified. So, the Majlis plans to approve a bill to remove the payments.
Some $10 billion is paid to travellers each year, he said, adding that they should provide foreign currency at the free market rate.
According to Mehr, every traveller can receive $1000, or the equivalent in other currencies for travelling abroad once in a year.
Those travellers who go to Azerbaijan, Armenia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, UAE, Turkey, Lebanon, Thailand, Georgia, Cyprus, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Maldives, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, China, Syria, Iraq and Saudi Arabia are paid maximum 400 dollars, or equivalent in other currencies.
