BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 5. Steel consumption in Iran has experienced a slight decline of 0.3 percent in the past Iranian year (from March 20, 2024, through March 20, 2025) compared to the previous year (from March 21, 2023, through March 19, 2024).
Data obtained by Trend from the Iranian Steel Producers Association (ISPA) indicates that around 24.3 million tons of crude steel were consumed in Iran during the past year, compared to around 24.2 million tons in the year before that.
The statistics also show that the consumption of finished steel products stood at 19.5 million tons, reflecting a decrease of 0.5 percent compared to the same period the previous year, when the figure was 19.6 million tons.
In contrast, the report notes a slight increase in the consumption of sponge iron, which reached nearly 32 million tons—an increase of 0.2 percent from the previous year’s 31.9 million tons.
To note, Iran's steel production capacity stands at around 40 million tons annually. Authorities in the country have stated that efforts are ongoing to expand this capacity.
