Manchester United and Aston Villa eased into the fourth round of the FA Cup with victories over lower-league opposition on Sunday, dpa reported.
Premier League champions United cruised past Championship side Southampton 3-0 at St Mary's Stadium, while Villa had a harder time of it before edging to a 2-1 win at League Two side Gillingham.
United will now host Tottenham Hotspur in the next round, while Villa are away to Cheltenham Town or Doncaster Rovers.
Danny Welbeck headed United in front against Southampton after 20 minutes and when Matt Paterson was sent off 10 minutes before half-time for a bad challenge on Nemanja Vidic the match was as good as over.
Nani converted from the penalty spot after a handball for United's second goal one minute into the second half and Darron Gibson made it 3-0 seven minutes from time with his first goal for the club.
Villa manager Martin O'Neill resisted the temptation to rest many of his top players and it was just as well as Gillingham matched them early on.
Villa did take the lead after 13 minutes, though, when a mistake by Adam Miller allowed James Milner to curl the ball into the corner.
But Gillingham equalised on 53 minutes when Simeon Jackson saw off Zat Knight to find the net with a fierce finish.
All the visitors' good work was undone, however, when Miller fouled Ashley Young and Milner stepped up to score the penalty for his second goal on what was his 23rd birthday.
"They (Gillingham) are very strong," O'Neill said. "They played very well and good luck to them this season."
"Never for one minute did I feel comfortable, Gillingham were always in the game even when we were leading 1-0.
"They got the equaliser and the game could have gone either way, but I felt we were dangerous enough on the break."
