A group of suspected insurgents on Sunday morning opened fire at farmers in of Thailand's southern province of Yala, resulting in three dead and one injured, Xinhua reported.
The ambush took place when a group of farmers were traveling to the rubber plantation in Bannang Sata district via motorcycles, according to a report of local news network Bangkok Post.
Two of the dead farmers were from Kamphaeng Phet province and they had worked in the deep South for just over a month.
One of the victims was a woman and she died at Bannang Sata hospital.
Police assumed the attack was carried out by a number of local insurgents who wanted to create ongoing unrest in southern Thailand.
Insurgent violence in Thailand's three southernmost provinces -- Pattani, Narathiwat and Yala -- have killed over 3,500 people in the region since its resurrection in January 2004.
