European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso Friday urged European Union member nations to assist the United States as it tries to shut down the prison camp for suspected terrorists in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, dpa reported.

Barroso told reporters it was up to EU members to help the US solve the problem of the facility, which is located on military base. However, he said this was his personal opinion and that there had been no debate in Brussels on the topic.

Barroso also welcomed US President Barack Obama's decision to close the prison within 12 months.

EU members have not come up with a cohesive policy on accepting detainees out of Guantanamo. The topic is set to come up during a meeting on Monday of EU foreign ministers.

Many of the prisoners held at Guantanamo have yet to face trial over any alleged ties to terrorist organizations. However, many countries are wary about accepting the detainee's after their release from the facility out of fear that, despite a lack of proof, that they might have some ties to terrorist groups.
