ASTANA, Kazakhstan, December 27. The Ekibastuz SDPS-1 (state district power station) has launched the operation of power unit No. 1, which had been out of service since a Soviet-era accident, Trend reports.
On December 26, 2025, the act of commissioning power unit №1 was signed at Ekibastuz state district power station. This is one of the most significant events in Kazakhstan’s energy sector in the last thirty years, with the participation of Kazakhstan's Vice Minister of Energy Sungat Yesimkhanov and the Chairman of the Board of Samruk-Energy, Kairat Maksutov.
The implementation of the project to restore power unit number 1 has allowed Ekibastuz state district power station to operate at full capacity for the first time in the past 30 years in an eight-unit mode. Recall that the station has eight blocks, each with a nominal capacity of 500 MW. Thus, the station's capacity increased to 4000 MW (up from no more than 3130 MW before).
It is estimated that the commissioning of power unit No. 1 will create new jobs—about 400 specialists are planned to be hired at Ekibastuz state district power station.
To note, Ekibastuz state district power station is one of the largest power stations in the CIS and the most powerful station in Kazakhstan operating on solid fuel. The station has a total of 8 power units, each capable of generating 500 MW. The project was implemented by a subsidiary of Samruk-Kazyna, Samruk-Energy.
