BAKU, Azerbaijan, Nov. 2
By Fidan Babayeva – Trend:
In terms of the amount of solar radiation falling on the surface of the Earth, the southern part of the Nagorno-Karabakh region, namely, Fuzuli, Jabrayil, Zangilan districts, ranks second after Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, Trend reports on Nov. 2 with reference to the Azerbaijani Ministry of Energy.
"Here, the solar radiation falling from a horizontal surface per square meter is 1,600-1,700 kilowatt-hours per year,” the statement said. “The total solar power capacity of these territories is 3,000-4,000 megawatts. After the complete liberation of the Azerbaijani lands from Armenia’s occupation, the exact potential will be calculated by installing the measuring stations of observation."
“As for the wind energy, the Ministry of Energy stressed that there are vast territories in the Nagorno-Karabakh region at an altitude of 100 meters with an average annual wind speed of 7-8 meters per second,” the statement said. “The average annual wind speed reaches 10 meters per second on the border of Kalbajar and Lachin districts with Armenia.”
"In general, the potential of wind energy is estimated at 300-500 megawatts in the mountainous districts of the Nagorno-Karabakh region," the statement said.
Moreover, there are reserves of thermal water in Kalbajar district (3,093 cubic meters per day), while in Shusha - 412 cubic meters per day.
"There are also coal deposits in the Nagorno-Karabakh region,” the statement said. “So, there are 8.5 million tons of coal reserves in Chardaghli village of Tartar district."
