Investigation launched into police power abuse case in Kazakhstan’s Zhanaozen

Three official investigations for abuse of power by police officers during mass riots have been launched into recent public unrests in the Kazakh city of Zhanaozen, the city's commandant Amanzhol Kabylov told journalists and bloggers, the official site of the Kazakh Prime Minister reported on Monday.

"Three official investigations have been launched for the abuse of power by police," Kabylov said.

According to Kabylov, the investigation is carried out by Kazakhstan's Prosecutor General's Office.

Unrest occurred in Zhanaozen city of Mangistau region on Dec. 16 during which 15 people were killed and roughly 100 were wounded. Buildings and cars were burned, property of individuals and legal entities were destructed. Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev declared a state of emergency from Dec. 17 to Jan.5.
