A high-ranking Iranian official has expressed hope that the country will mine about six tons of gold over the current fiscal year (starting March 20).
Jafar Sargheini, a deputy industry minister, has said that the country had set a target to extract seven tons of gold over the current year which is unlikely to be fulfilled, IRNA news agency reported.
He further forecasted that the country’s gold output would increase year by year as the industry ministry has devised plans to boost the sector.
Iran’s annual gold output has already hit five tons and the policymakers are hopeful that the figure would reach ten tons by 2021.
The provinces of East and West Azerbaijan, Tehran, Isfahan and Khorassan Razavi are the top gold production spots in the country.
Iran's National Geology and Mineral Exploration Organization put the proven and probable gold reserves at 320 tons.
