A British man whose fatal shooting during an arrest sparked the current riots did not open fire at police officers before he was shot dead, an independent investigation showed Tuesday, DPA reported.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said there was "no evidence" that Mark Duggan, 26, had opened fire before he was shot.

Duggan died during the arrest in Tottenham, north London last week. A handgun found at the scene was not fired, the IPPC said, following ballistic test results.

The current wave of violent protests, looting and arson started in Tottenham Saturday following a memorial march for Duggan, a father of four.

On Tuesday, his family said they were "distressed" about the disorder his death had apparently caused.
