Georgia, Tbilisi, Dec. 19 / Trend , N.Kirtzkhalia/ Elections in Georgia in 2008 did not meet any international standards, Tamar Khidasheli, the chairman of the Association of Young Lawyers of Georgia (AYLG), said at a news conference on Dec. 19.
The Association held monitoring of the presidential elections on Jan. 5, the parliamentary elections on May 21 and elections to the Supreme Council of Ajara on Nov. 3, she said. The AYLG monitored not only the election process, but also pre-election period. The organization revealed serious violations in all three elections, Khidasheli said.
There were a lot of violations in all three elections, Nino Lomjariya, the head of the monitoring mission of the Association, said. For instance, governmental officials actively participated in the pre-election campaign, candidates unevenly used administrative resources, there was bribery in this period, as well as there was not a border between the party and governmental activities. Moreover, elections were implemented with violations, technical failures and threats to voters were observed. Neither district nor central commissions examined complaints, Lomjariya said.
The Election Code of the country enables appearance of all violations, because the code enables to interpret article differently, representatives of the Association said.
Levan Tarkhnishvili, the chairman of the CEC, partially agreed with statements of the AYLG and said that it is necessary to conduct serious work to eliminate these shortages.
