ASTANA, Kazakhstan, December 17. Kazakhstan expects the launch of a new terminal at the Shymkent airport by the end of the year, which will increase its capacity by 7.5 times, Trend reports.
This was announced on the official information resource of the government of Kazakhstan, as part of the current year's results. The overall results also touched upon the topic of transport infrastructure. As part of the state program, work has begun this year on the repair and construction of 12,000 km of highways in Kazakhstan, with 7,000 km to be completed by the end of the year.
In 2024, Kazakhstan made significant steps in the development of air transport. New passenger terminals were put into operation at the airports in Almaty and Kyzylorda. The capacity of the Almaty terminal was increased sixfold (from 2.5 million to 14 million passengers per year), and in Kyzylorda, it was increased sevenfold (from 300,000 to 2 million passengers per year).
In 2024, Kazakhstan significantly strengthened its maritime infrastructure. A container hub with a capacity of 300,000 TEUs per year is under construction at the port of Aktau. Work has begun on the construction of a new grain terminal at the port of Kuryk and a multifunctional terminal, "Sarzha" which will expand transit potential and increase the capacity of Kazakhstan's ports to 30 million tons per year.
In the field of railway transport, work continues on the repair of the main railway network. In 2024, 1,401 km were repaired (including 570 km of capital repairs, 187 km of component repairs, and 644 km of scheduled maintenance). Additionally, 143 passenger cars, 185 locomotives, and 1,500 freight cars were updated this year.
To note, at the end of 11 months of 2024, rail transport carried 19.2 million passengers and 390.5 million tons of cargo. The growth in passenger transportation amounted to 5.5 percent compared to 2023.
