ASTANA, Kazakhstan, December 26. On December 25, the grand opening of the new airport terminal in Shymkent, Kazakhstan, took place, Trend reports.
The new terminal covers an area of 39,000 square meters. Its capacity is up to 2,000 passengers per hour. The facility boasts 25 escalators, 14 elevators, 6 jet bridges, and travelators.
The SCAT company became the first airline to relocate its flights to the new terminal. Efforts are underway to transfer both domestic and international carriers to the new terminal.
The new terminal's apron now boasts parking spaces for 10 airplanes. The project cost amounted to 24 billion tenge ($46.4 million), with SCAT Airlines being the investor.
“Kazakhstan's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has repeatedly emphasized the importance of developing transport infrastructure as a strategic priority. The new terminal is a response to the growing needs of our dynamically developing city. The key factor is the 700 new jobs that our citizens will have. This provides an opportunity for the residents and guests of Shymkent to travel comfortably, easily, and quickly,” said Shymkent's Akim, Gabit Syzdykbekov.
To note, SCAT Airlines is one of the largest airlines in Kazakhstan, headquartered in Shymkent. Its hub airports are located in cities such as Aktau, Almaty, Astana, and Shymkent. SCAT also owns a subsidiary airline, Sunday Airlines.
