The Azerbaijani Transport Ministry plans to construct the Baku International Sea Port in the Alat settlement, Ministry Transport Policy and Economy Department Head Sadraddin Mammadov said on April 14.
At present the Dutch "Royal Haskoning" company which won the tender to design the new port has begun to fulfill the contract.
"Work on this project is actively conducted. I think designing work will finish in time. And construction work will begin in 2009," Mammadov said.
Mammadov said geological exploration work will be launched after finishing developing the primary documentation.
Tenders will be announced to construct onshore and offshore sections of the new port within 6 months, Azerbaijani Deputy Transport Minister Musa Panahov said earlier.
This port will be multi modules as it is planned to create free economic zone in its territory in future besides logistics center.
The new international sea port in Alat settlement will be constructed at three stages and complete by 2015. The first stage of the project covering 2008-2010 envisages construction of two ferries, three freight bridges for containers, crafts of ro-ro kind and simple (universal) dry cargos. The second stage of the project (2011-2013) envisages construction of other three freight bridges, the third one (2014-2015) - construction of two additional freight bridges. The construction project worth over $400 million.
Royal Haskoning, the engineering construction-designing company, was established in the Netherlands in 1881.
