The five-year, long-term agreement signed with Azerbaijan's SOCAR is the basis of Georgia's energy security, Prime Minister Nika Gilauri said.

"This agreement is beneficial for Georgia not only in terms of tariffs, as we get gas cheaper than in the regions, except for Azerbaijan itself, but also in terms of the gas supply balance," he said.

Gilauri told MPs that the Inguri hydroelectric power station has not worked for the last ten days. This has not affected Georgia's energy supplies.
"This happened thanks to the agreement with SOCAR, which provides Georgia with the missing 500-600 million cubic meters of gas," he said.

The prime minister said Georgia lacks gas obtained from transit from the Shah-Deniz Field for domestic use and gas for transit from Russia to Armenia.
