BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 4. The EU sees a potential role for Turkmenistan in efforts to diversify gas sources through the Southern Gas Corridor, a source in the European Commission Spokesperson’s Service told Trend.
"The EU is cooperating with several governments on the Southern Gas Corridor. In this respect, Turkmenistan could play a role in the EU’s gas source diversification efforts given its plans to increase supplies through the Southern Gas Corridor," the source said.
Furthermore, it was noted that the EU is very eager to keep exchanging views with Turkmenistan on energy policy-related issues, including the promotion of renewable energy and energy efficiency, as well as the abatement of methane emissions.
"The EU-Turkmenistan energy relations take place in the framework of the 2008 Energy Memorandum of Understanding that covers cooperation on energy security, “energy infrastructure of mutual interest," renewable energy, and energy efficiency. The latest meeting of the Working group in this framework took place in Brussels on April 12," the source added.
Meanwhile, the Turkmengaz State Concern of Turkmenistan estimates the nation's hydrocarbon resources at over 71 billion tons of oil equivalent. This volume includes more than 20 billion tons of oil and more than 50 trillion cubic meters of natural gas.
The Southern Gas Corridor is a major infrastructure project aimed at transporting natural gas from Azerbaijan to Europe via Türkiye. The project aims to diversify the sources of gas supplies to Europe, reduce its dependence on Russian gas, and improve the energy security of the region.
