UN Secretary General to tour Central Asian countries

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon sent the message to President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov congratulating the Turkmen leader on the recent meeting with the Presidents of the Central Asian countries during the CIS Summit in Bishkek and the important agreements achieved on the energy and water issues. The UN Secretary-General noted that the dialogue was the best instrument to enhance the good neighbouring relations and mutually beneficial co-operation among the states, informs Turkmen State News Agency (TDH).

Ban Ki-moon expressed gratitude for inviting Miroslav Jenca, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and the Head of the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy in Central Asia to participate in the meeting. Ban Ki-moon said that he welcomed employing the potential of the UN Regional Centre by the Turkmen leader, reported  CA-NEWS.

The UN Secretary-General emphasized that he attached paramount significance to Central Asia and its future noting that the Regional Centre and the UN agencies in the region would work together to provide the more effective assistance and support regional efforts. The UN Secretary-General said that it was great honour for him to receive the invitations from several countries to visit Central Asia and expressed belief that he would consider this opportunity in the nearest future in 2009, the TDH said.

The UN Secretary-General assured the President of Turkmenistan that the United Nations stood ready to strengthen co-operation for the benefit of the peoples of Central Asia and enhance stability, security and sustainable development in the region.
