A law prohibiting more than a 20 per cent hike in energy prices for the rest of the year has been passed today by the Iranian parliament.
The bill, introduced by Ali Larijani, the speaker of Iran's Majlis (parliament) bans the government from increasing energy prices more than 20 per cent for the rest of the year as part of its targeted subsidies programme. Iran's solar year ends on March 20.
The Iranian government pays each citizen $45 a month as compensation for eliminating commodities' and energy subsidies. Cutting out the energy subsidies was expected to drive down Iranians' energy consumption.
