Preliminary figures show Iran's production of processed iron ore was up 7.2 per cent in the first four months of this year compared to the same time last year.

That means nearly 10 million tons of iron ore has been produced since Iran's New Year began on March 20, compared to 9.3 million tons last year, the Iranian Students' News Agency (ISNA) reports.

The Chadormalou Industrial and Mining Company, Gol Gohar Iron Ore and Markazi Iran are the country's biggest iron ore producers.

A report by the U.S. Geological Survey ranked Iran as one of the top 10 iron ore producers in the world and said the country had produced 30 million tons of iron ore in 2011.
