Azerbaijani ruling party believes recent statements by Turkish authorities on not opening borders with Armenia are sincere.

"Today Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said once again that they will never take a step to the detriment of Azerbaijan's interests. We should wait for the further development of events," Azerbaijani ruling party Deputy Executive Secretary and MP Siyavush Novruzov told Trend .

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on April 9 that Turkey will not cooperate with Armenia until Azerbaijani lands are liberated.

Different circles in Turkey claim Turkey-Armenia borders will be opened.

Armenian-Turkish ties have been severed since 1993 due to Armenia's claims of an alleged genocide, and the country's occupation of 20 percent of Azerbaijani lands.

Turkish President Abdullah Gul visited Yerevan on Sept. 6, 2008 upon the invitation of his Armenian counterpart Serzh Sargsyan to watch an Armenia-Turkey football match.

Efforts have been made to normalize ties between the two countries ever since.

Novruzov said there is no ground not to believe statements by Turkish officials.

"Opening borders with Armenia is a serious issue for inter-state and intergovernmental ties. An action should stand behind these statements," he added.

He said if Turkish authorities do not keep their promise, serious steps will be taken.

The NAP was established by Nakhchivan Parliamentary Speaker Heydar Aliyev in 1992.

President Ilham Aliyev is the party's chairman. The party has ruled the country for 15 years.
