Serious infringements of the environmental protection law were uncovered in southwestern Azerbaijan in 2008. Among the regions in question were Mingachevir, Yevlakh, Barda, Agdash and Tartar, the Ecology and Natural Resources Ministry told Trend on Jan. 6.
Around 100 reports and three protocols were written concerning environmental damage as a result of raids and checks conducted by the ministry in 2008.
"One report concerned ground depths; two reports - the incorrect usage of repulsions; another two - protecting available water resources; five - illegally buying and selling charcoal; 45 - protecting the atmosphere; and 45 were isolated to the population and land owners," the ministry said on Jan. 6.
Some 222,029 manat were invested to uncover the infringements of the environmental protection law.
Six citizens were fined 3,580 manat for breaking the law. The Environmental Protection Reserve Fund was paid 684 manat. Lawsuits were brought against organizations and individuals for damaging the environment. A portion of the fines paid as a result of the legal proceedings went to the Environmental Protection Reserve Fund.
