DUSHANBE, Tajikistan, January 16. The contribution of the transport sector to Tajikistan's GDP amounted to 10.986 billion somoni ($1 billion) in 2023, Tajikistan's Minister of Transport, Azim Ibrohim, said, Trend reports.
He noted that the share of the transportation sector in the country's GDP reached 8.4 percent in 2023, which is a 0.2 percent increase compared to 2022.
According to the minister, with full digitization, the transportation sector's contribution to the country's GDP is expected to grow even further.
In the past year, 2,623 organizations across various ownership structures were engaged in Tajikistan's transport sector, which is an increase of 335 organizations, or 14.6 percent, compared to the figures from 2022.
According to the data from the Statistical Agency under the President of Tajikistan, a total of 120.5 million tons of goods were transported by all modes of transport in 2023, with 114.1 million tons carried by road transport (94.7 percent) and 6.5 million tons by railways (5.3 percent). Passenger transport reached 899.3 million passengers.
The minister of transport noted that last year, the market share of domestic carriers in freight transportation decreased by 8.6 percent compared to 2022, accounting for 57.3 percent.
