TASHKENT, Uzbekistan, February 19. Uzbekistan imported 16,500 tons of lemons in 2024, with a total value of $3.9 million.
As per data obtained by Trend from Uzbekistan's Statistics Agency, over the course of a year, Türkiye led the pack, sending a whopping 10,024 tons to Uzbekistan. Hot on its heels was China, contributing 4,106 tons, while Tajikistan trailed behind with a modest 1,230 tons. Iran came to the table with 499 tons, while Argentina packed its bags and sent off 382 tons. The leftover 235 tons rolled in from a mixed bag of other countries.
Even with such a mountain of imports, Uzbekistan still manages to squeeze out some lemons of its own. Uzbek lemons originate from Uzbekistan and were cultivated in the late 20th century. Lemon growing in Uzbekistan commenced in the 1940s with the introduction of various Georgian types for assessment and study. Uzbekistan is characterized by a continental climate, resulting in extremely hot summers and frigid winters. This climate poses difficulties for lemon cultivation, ultimately resulting in the trees failing to establish roots.
