Georgian ex-Foreign Minister and the leader of the Way of Georgia Party Salome Zourabichvili filed a lawsuit at Tbilisi City Court, in which she asked to appeal the decision of the Central Election Commission (CEC) that refused to register her as a candidate for the presidential election because of her dual citizenship.
As Zourabichvili accounted, she considers the CEC's decision is a violation of the Constitution, as the law prohibits a dual citizen being able to hold the presidency and not to register as a candidate.
"I demand that the CEC did not interpret the Constitution and took decisions clearly on it. I need concessions, I need legal compliance," she said.
The ex-foreign minister promised that if she wins the presidential election, she will renounce her French citizenship before the inauguration.
The influential NGO Association of Young Lawyers of Georgia will represent Zourabishvili's interests in court.
The presidential election in Georgia is scheduled for October 27.
