Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko stands against election of the head of state in parliament, Vesti reported. "I am convinced that for unitary state, like Ukraine, that will be a destructive blow at freedom and democracy," he declared on Monday evening [1 December].

"There must be at least one position in the country, which creates a system of national balances, different areas and representatives of different sectors," stressed Yushchenko.

However, the President called for constitutional reforms. He called to form a national commission of the parliamentary and non-parliamentary forces, constitutional law experts, eminent persons in society in order to develop a new edition of the Constitution, ITAR-TASS reports
