Nigeria's Flying Eagles on Monday afternoon defeated Egypt Young Pharaohs 2-0 and began their campaign on the ongoing U-20 Africa Youth Championship (AYC) in Kigali, Rwanda on a winning note.
The Nigerian U-20 eagles led by coach Ladan Basso, were not impressed in the Group B opening match, but were able to score through Kingsley Udoh, who opened scoring in the 39th minute via a header to end the first half 1-0, Xinhua reported.
In the second half, coach Bosso substituted skipper Ganiu Oseni for Gbolahan Salami but Salami's inclusion only gave the team the second goal.
The lanky player missed several clear chances, but his deadly cross to Yakubu Alfa sealed victory for Nigeria, as Alfa netted the second goal in the 56th minute.
The Egyptians who were not aggressive up front however, could not curtail the Flying Eagles' individual play.
The Nigerian team did not show much seriousness in the game like their Egyptian opponents, who played only four straight shot at goal through out the match.
The Flying Eagles' next match is against South Africa on Thursday while their last game is against Cote d'Ivoire on Sunday.
