Report: President of damaged Japan nuclear plant operator to resign

The president of Tokyo Electric Power Co, which runs a damaged nuclear plant in north-eastern Japan, would resign to take responsibility for an expected record loss in the past financial year because of the accident, a news report said Friday.

Masataka Shimizu would step down amid the nuclear crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, 250 kilometres north-east of Tokyo, the Yomiuri newspaper reported.

The plant was crippled by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, and it has leaked radiation ever sine, DPA reported.

The company on Friday is to announce personnel changes along with its earnings results for the financial year that ended in March. Yomiuri said the loss was expected to amount to 1.5 trillion yen (18.4 billion dollars).

The company's auditor, Katsutoshi Chikudate, was expected to succeed Shimizu, said the newspaper, which did not cite a source for its report.
