Azerbaijan, Baku, 28 February / Trend corr I. Alizade/ The Chair of the Azerbaijani Standing Parliamentary Committee for Regional Affairs, Arif Rahimzade, says that there is no need of establishing the Baku Municipality and electing a Baku Mayor. " Baku is a very large city. Therefore, it is too late to establish a common municipality in the city," he said to the journalists.
The congress of local and regional administrations of the Council of Europe advised last year to establish the Baku Municipality and to hold Mayor elections in the city.
According to Rahimzade, first of all, the regional municipalities in Azerbaijan should be improved. "There is no necessity in the artificial precipitation of establishing municipalities in large cities, including Baku."
He noted that determination of the Baku status and the Mayor elections is not the current agenda, and is not expected to be in the near future.
" Baku has, rather, a high status. First of all, the city has to gain a foothold in this aspect," he said.
