Azerbaijan, Baku, Jan. 13 / Trend , J.Babayeva /
Inadequate penalty upon 15 Azerbaijani citizens may damage the Azerbaijan-Georgia friendship. Azerbaijanis wanted to give bribery to Georgian police while crossing the country's border, a member of the Azerbaijani delegation to PACE MP Gultakin Hajibayli said to journalists on Jan. 13.
"Azerbaijani citizens, who offered bribery to frontier guards, will be fined in the sum of 10,000 lari ($7,000) or imprisoned to seven years. This serious penalty to Azerbaijanis is unacceptable," MP said.
Since Jan. 1 2009 police officers provide security on the Georgian border. According to the Georgian Internal Ministry, roughly eleven citizens from Turkey, Azerbaijan and Armenia, who attempted to give bribery to police, were detained in five days.
Azerbaijani citizens are also guilty in this situation. "Azerbaijan supported Georgia during the developments in August and it can not agree with Georgia's strict measures against Azerbaijanis. I hope that Georgia will prevent the damage that can be made to the Azerbaijan-Georgia friendship," MP said.
