Turkmenistan prepares amnesty by Victory Day

Regular amnesty will be prepared for Victory Day - 9 May, the Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said at the last meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers.

"A decree on pardon will be issued on behalf of this nice date in accordance with tradition in the country,"national TV channel Altin Asir cited the words of the President on May 2.

Amnesties are traditionally announced on the threshold of memorial dates in Turkmenistan. Previous amnesty was held on the threshold of State Flag Day celebrated on February 19. Roughly 990 imprisoned people were released.

Amnesty was timed to Neutrality Day - December 12, 2008. Roughly 390 prisoners were released. Rouhgly 1,700 prisoners were released on the threshold of omnipotence night (muslim holiday) in September, 900 prisoners - on the threshold of May 9, about 1,300 prisoners - on the threshold of Flag Day.
