ASTANA, Kazakhstan, April 15. Askhat Khassenov, Chairman of the Management Board of KazMunayGas (KMG), met with Chevron Chairman Michael Wirth to discuss the ongoing development of the Tengiz and Karachaganak oil fields, as well as future cooperation in geological exploration, Trend reports.
In the course of the meeting, both sides highlighted the successful completion of the Tengiz Future Growth Project, calling it a key milestone in strengthening Kazakhstan’s energy security and sustainable development.
Khassenov emphasized the importance of regular technical maintenance and modernization of production facilities to ensure industrial safety. He also stressed the need to localize more production within Kazakhstan to support the development of a robust industrial cluster serving the Tengiz project.
The discussion also touched on increasing the share of Kazakhstani professionals in leadership roles at Tengizchevroil (TCO). According to the company, many local specialists have already completed international training programs and gained the necessary qualifications and experience to step into senior management positions.
"Regarding the Karachaganak field, the two sides reviewed progress on the construction of a new gas processing plant with a planned capacity of 4.5 billion cubic meters of raw gas annually," Khassenov stated.
Khassenov thanked Chevron for its ongoing support in developing Kazakhstan’s petrochemical industry and reaffirmed KMG’s commitment to expanding strategic cooperation.
"KazMunayGas highly values its partnership with Chevron, and we are committed to deepening our collaboration to advance promising industrial projects," Khassenov concluded.
In January 2025, KMG, Chevron, and Shell executed strategic agreements to collaboratively leverage geological datasets to optimize exploration methodologies. This collaboration aims to assess the viability and strategic implications of the Mugodzhary initiative within the geopolitical landscape of Kazakhstan’s Aktobe region.
