The $65 billion in goods Iran imports annually is too much, the head of the Institute of Standard and Industrial Research of Iran (ISIRI) Nezamoddin Barzegari told a gathering of model industrial and mining producers, Mehr reported.
Nezamoddin Barzegari, the head of ISIRI, told the gathering that Iran has to seriously support production of export oriented goods.
The food and household appliances industries have increased the quality of their products but other sectors haven't met quality standards yet, said ISIRI's chief who added that producing high quality goods and promoting the use of domestic products will help Iran's economy.
As for the problems that have cropped up in importing raw materials because of the international sanctions against Iran, Mr. Barzegari, said the government's task force composed of the country's oil, industry, and economic ministers and the head of Iran's Central Bank, will be working to provide and circulate liquidity.
Iran's economy is under pressure from international sanctions against the country's oil industry and its Central Bank. July 1 marked the start of the European Union's embargo against Iran's oil, adding even more stress to the country's economy.
The sanctions are part of an effort by the U.S. and to make Iran become more transparent about its nuclear development programme. Iran says its programme is peaceful and civilian in nature, while the West disagrees.
