Iran ranks sixth in the world in terms of mushroom cultivation, said Director General of the Greenhouses, Medicinal Plants and Edible Mushrooms Affairs Office with the Ministry of Agriculture Jihad Gholamreza Taqavi, Trend reports citing ISNA.
According to Taqavi, at present, Iran's mushroom production is about 180,000 tons a year.
Taqavi added that the largest mushroom farms in Iran are located in Tehran, Alborz, Qazvin, Khorasan, Isfahan and Mazandaran provinces.
The director general said that 35,000 tons of mushroom were produced in Tehran province in the last Iranian year (from March 21, 2019 to March 20, 2020), while production is projected to exceed 40,000 tons this year (began March 20, 2020).
The official said that more than 3,000 large and small enterprises operate in Iran's mushroom sector.
He added that consumption of mushroom per capita in Iran is more than 1.5 kilograms per year.
Currently, the wholesale price of 1 kg of mushrooms is 135,000 rials (about $3.2), and the product costs about 20,000-30,000 rials (about 40-70 cent) in packages, he said.
