BAKU, Azerbaijan, December 8. Going forward, ADB will focus more on improving the domestic road network making it climate-resilient, safe, and sustainable, a source in ADB told Trend.
Since Tajikistan joined the bank in 1998, ADB has provided comprehensive assistance to the country's sector.
ADB assisted Tajikistan in rehabilitating over 700 km of key road corridors in the country, piloting performance-based maintenance, developing a road asset management system, improving road safety, rehabilitating key border crossing points, and developing a national single window system.
"Given its mountainous terrain, landlocked location, and the fact that other modes of transport remain underdeveloped, roads play a key role in moving people and goods in Tajikistan, both domestically and internationally," the source in ADB said.
While significant progress has been made in developing international corridors, the domestic road network is still unable to connect local economies to them.
Meanwhile, in early November the Minister of Finance of Tajikistan Fayziddin Qahhorzoda and the ADB Country Director in Tajikistan Shanny Campbel signed a $43.2 million road sustainability grant agreement, which will rehabilitate a 40-kilometer section of road from Okmazor to Bokhtar in the Khatlon region.
