BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 23. Iran's wheat demands were covered by a guaranteed purchase of almost 12 million tons of wheat from farmers between April 11 and September 21, 2024, the official representative of Iran's Ministry of Agriculture Sohrab Sohrabi told reporters, Trend reports.
According to him, the country's annual demand for wheat is 11.5 million tons. As much as 10 million tons of it is needed for grain and 1.5 million tons for other flour products.
Sohrabi noted that the purchased wheat has increased by 1.63 million tons, in other words, by 16 percent compared to the same period last year.
The official added that the value of the guaranteed purchased wheat amounted to 2.11 quadrillion rials (about $4.82 billion). To date, 1.67 quadrillion rials (about $3.81 billion) of the mentioned wheat funds have been paid to farmers. Work is underway to pay the rest of the amount soon.
He stated that 15 million tons of wheat is expected to be harvested in the country this year.
To note, during the current Iranian year (from March 20, 2024, through March 20, 2025), 1 kilogram of wheat in Iran is purchased with a guarantee by the State Trading Company for 175,000–180,000 rials (about $4.17–$4.3).
