BAKU, Azerbaijan, March 27. Iran plans to increase its electricity production by over 3,129 megawatts by the summer of this year, Nasser Eskandari, Deputy Executive Director of the Thermal Power Generation Company (TPPH), told reporters, Trend reports.
He explained that the planned increase in electricity production will be achieved through the commissioning of new power stations, the conversion of gas units into combined cycle units, and the launch of substations aimed at enabling industrial plants to become self-sufficient.
Eskandari further noted that by the end of this year (from March 21, 2025, through March 20, 2026), Iran's electrical generation potential in its thermal power plants will grow by 9,000 megawatts, while renewable energy plants will contribute an additional 1,000 megawatts. These power stations will be built in various provinces, including East Azerbaijan, Tehran, Khuzestan, Kerman, Yazd, and Sistan and Baluchestan.
Additionally, by 2029, the country plans to add 2,000 megawatts to its thermal power plants through various modernization operations, requiring an estimated investment of 400 million euros. It is expected that this funding will be secured through a partnership between the state and private sectors.
To note, Iran's electricity generation potential is 93,455 thousand megawatts. The generation potential of Iran's thermal power plants is 76,257 megawatts, the generation potential of hydropower plants is 12,144 megawatts, the generation potential of retail power plants is 2,485 megawatts, the generation potential of renewable power plants is 1,300 megawatts, the generation potential of Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant is 1,020 megawatts, and the generation potential of diesel units is 408 megawatts.
