BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 7. Iran has increased its electricity imports from neighboring countries by 200 megawatts since March 21, 2025, compared to the same period last year, said Abbas Aliabadi, Iran’s Minister of Energy, Trend reports.
Speaking at an event held by the Tehran Province Electricity Distribution Company, Aliabadi noted that Iran's electricity imports have now reached 500 megawatts, up from 300 megawatts during the same time last year.
He explained that the reduction in the country’s domestic electricity generation is due to low water levels in reservoirs, which have affected the operation of hydropower plants. He also mentioned that the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant had been temporarily out of operation for maintenance but will resume by the summer.
Aliabadi also shared that Iran's thermal power plants’ electricity production capacity has increased from 40,000 megawatts last year to 45,000 megawatts this year, and renewable energy plants have increased their production from 300 megawatts to 700 megawatts.
Iran's electricity production potential previously stood at 93,455 megawatts. The production potential of Iran's thermal power plants is 76,257 megawatts, the production potential of hydroelectric power plants is 12,144 megawatts, the production potential of retail power plants is 2,485 megawatts, the production potential of renewable power plants is 1,450 megawatts, the production potential of the Bushehr nuclear power plant is 1,020 megawatts, and the production potential of diesel units is 408 megawatts.
