Iran to face 2,000 megawatts of electricity deficit in summer, said Houshang Falahatian, Iranian deputy energy minister.
Falahatian said the country's electricity generation capacity will be increased by 1500MW before summer, adding that however 2000MW of electricity deficit should be dealt with through encouraging people to save energy during peak hours, Iran's Fars news agency reported on Jan. 21.
Meanwhile, Iran's energy minister Hamid Chitchian previously said that due to a lack of finance and some problems in establishing power plants the country will face electricity deficit.
So, the deficit should be dealt with through taking efficient management methods and encouraging people to save energy.
Chitchian added that Iran will boost its electricity generation capacity to 100,000 megawatts by the next five years.
Some of the old and worn-out power plants will be scrapped and the efficiency of other power plants will be improved, he added.
Iran's total electricity generation currently stands at 70,000 megawatts.
Power generation capacity in Iran has grown by seven percent annually during the past 10 years. Iran is currently the biggest electricity producer in the Middle East.
